Yeah - I also hate those "reality checks" - I just had mine. I actually (after 40+ years of working non-stop) decided to just quit my job at a large law firm in DC and just veg out and try to get rid of some post-shingles pain. I quit the week before Christmas and, fortunately, had a decent $$$ cushion to fall back on. I was really hoping I could still be in the legal secretary field but out in the suburbs instead of spending an average of 3 hours a day commuting. Well - my reality check is that the only decent $$$ is "IN" D.C. - so - I'm selling my soul back to the devil again and going back into the city.
However, it's been great to pretend to be retired and get my 401K retirement $$$ put into place for when I get my farm up and running in two years. I currently have a "herd of one" - a 4-year-old herdsire alpaca named "Garth Vader." Garth lives in North Caroline for the time being and I'll bring him up to Western Pa. in about a year and a half to board at an alpaca farm about 1/2 hour from where I'll be.
In the meantime - the mortgage needs to be paid and my kitties need to be fed - so back to the "wonderful world of D.C. law" - RATS!
Good luck to you!
My 401k worth of 12 years at my company was embezzled by my union's accounting firm. It was a situation bigger than Enron but didn't get a lot of press except in the Wall Street Journal. That's what triggered my desire to quit that company and go into something entirely different. I had other pretty substantial savings but that was diminished pretty quickly. I live in a town in which it is difficult to find work so my immediate goal is to get the heck out of here.
Best of luck to you with your farm. I bet you will get your soul back from the devil soon and have your alpaca farm. It's a great goal .
