My voter's registration would have had my current name too. The guy claimed that I needed proof that my name changed from my maiden on my birth certificate to the name I have now. I thought it was crazy that he could not accept my U.S. Air Force Retiree ID Card. You have to be a citizen to have one of those because you can join the military as a noncitizen but can't stay in after the first 4 years without becoming naturalized.
Sadly, you do not have to be a citizen the have a voter's registration. The system is not very tight when verifying it. I met a guy who was getting state benefits and was not a citizen, and I could do nothing about it because he had a voter's registration card but no American birth certificate. The thinking behind this is that you must have had a birth certificate to get the voter registration. I was disappointed to find out how easy it was for him to beat this system.
I would have needed my marriage certificates, showing the name changes and divorce decrees, showing my name stayed the same. That's what I carry now. I think this is my burden to carry for having been married more than once.
Sending you love and light...
Back in the day when a voter's registration card was acceptable as proof of citizenship there was no need to show a birth certificate. You do have to be a citizen to vote in our country, but unfortunately the cards are easily forged. I have told clients (female) that they will have to show proof of marriage, etc. if they are using a birth certificate as legal ID.
None of this beats the fellow who told me he had a visa for his trip to Japan, somehow was let on the flight from Chicago to LAX, but then not allowed to fly to Tokyo. Turns out he had a visa credit card, not a visa for Japan. After that experience I asked to see any obtained visas before I issued tickets!!
Even though it is a rather large expense now, getting a passport will eliminate the problem. There are instances where even an expired passport will suffice.
Being married more than once can be considered a sign of intelligence!
