IMHO, those "opinions" cited in the WP article are just that - opinions, devoid of any factual support.
There is one interesting item in the article tho - the notion that in America we've become so used to "getting it all" (or being told we'll get it all) we could never support Universal Care, because we're insatiable. Perhaps, but my guess is that its the providers inventing ever expanding series of tests, coupled with the pharmaceutical industrie's refusal to find a cure for anything because treating it is so much more profitable.
The major problem however is that we turned medicine into a business rather than a profession. Today's doctors prefer being paid help rather than independent professionals, probably because the lawyers have made it impossible to practice medicine without your own on-call legal staff - interesting bit of symbiosis for the lawyers, doncha think?
Once upon a time, everyone could afford to call the doctor because the doctor would adjust his fees according to the patients ability to pay. When Insurance companies became the one's paying, they drastically reduced that practice, and when the Doctors became hired help, it vanished altogether.
What we need to do is rid ourselves of the nincompoops who DEMAND our medical care delivery system deliver EVERYTHING - these are the morons who insisted Terry Sheivo's corpse continue to receive "function support" long after life had ended and think because it's possible to resuscitate a 97 year old cancer patient OR a 4 month premature, 14 ounce fetus, that it MUST be done. Those nincompoops run for office as "Republicans", and by eliminating them from the equation, universal health care in America would be a snap.
