Here's a fun genre we haven't talked about yet! I just came from a screening of Ponyo--it's being released this week by Disney, but it's an animated film by the great Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki. He's been called the Japanese Walt Disney, and one of the great thing about his work is he's still doing old-fashioned cel animation--not the 3-D computer stuff that's all beginning to look so much the same.
Miyazaki's films usually have a child at their center--but they are aimed directly at grownups. In fact, I sometimes think they're much too dark and confusing for little kids. If you haven't seen his "Spirited Away," and you love great animation, get it right away.
I've always loved great animation, so I'll hold off on my list. What are your favorites?
I love animated films. I am a child at heart when it comes to movies.
"Up" was definitely one of the best animated movies this summer. Ed Asner was great.
The Shrek movies definitely appeal to grownups and are very good. I saw them all several times - without the grandkids because my daughter-in-law thinks they are not appropriate for kids. :( I disagree - but that is another story.
Also I love the Madagascar movies - which have adult humor mixed in as well - and definitely ARE appropriate for kids too. I hear Madagascar III comes out this year.
Disney's Lion King and Beauty & the Beast remain my all time favorites.
