Gee, Amy, are you and I the only two who are gonna miss John Hughes? I keep seeing
Ben Stein in those TV commercials with Saquille O'Neal, and it just keeps me thinking of him in Ferris Beuller's Day Off. Oh well.
*Sigh* I find it interesting how many are comparing him to J.D. Salinger.
Did you read Molly Ringwald's piece in The Times about him? I compared this to a heartfelt blog I read by a woman who used to be a pen pal of sorts with Hughes. When she was a young teenager, she'd poured out her soul to him, explaining how much she identified with the characters in his movies. When she received a form letter from the John Hughes fan club as a response, she went ballistic and challenged him to address her personally. Through an interesting turn of events, they began a dialogue through which she communicated all the trials and tribulations that accompanied her teenage years. He, in turn, opened up about his story ideas and his own demons in contending with Hollywood. He eventually left short after the death of his friend John Candy. Anyhow, in comparing these two writings--one by a celebrity and one by an unknown--it became clear that Hughes (through his movies) impacted so many in the same way.
