Hi D! I can't count how many folks have told me that they will sing or listen to anything EXCEPT RAP (and heavy metal usually)! 'Course heavy metal would have to be rock n' roll I guess, right? Though I grew up with the old rock n' roll (50s) some R&B, I was heavily exposed to "standards," church music and of course, Opera and religious music mostly from my Dad who sang avocationally his whole life. I still have some of his old music that he doesn't have stowed away (laughing) like "Travelin," and probably his signature song "Danny Boy." Finally, I was able to actually sing that with him as his backup two years ago up in Wisconsin at a small family gathering. Anyway, it does seem as other's have said that the definition of rock n' roll has been perhaps diluted over the years. And the explosion of categories may be the way organizer's see it as tweaking the original like amending our Constitution, not sure. The delay in a "sideman?" category was probably justified to include those who primarily just play an instrument; "early influences" sounds more like a blank check to me since many never actually later performed "rock n' roll" maybe. Is there, like other "Halls" a Songwriter mainly cateogory or do they fit into another category and/or wind up in multiple categories then? Think Bob Seger, Burt Bacharach, Carole King, others? Though my kids primarily were weaned on 80s rock I still love some of it; today, I like some stuff from Radiohead, Three Doors Down, etc; just don't listen to it daily - hey, I'm older lol! But I did like their music (Eagles, Foreigner, Air Supply, etc); And when they were in High School I was a booster club member supporting our well known in South Texas football team; their signature song was Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger." Enough rambling/reminiscing. Footnote: Let's start a campaign for ONE central Hall of Fame for everyone with 25 years of activity who is still passed over for recognition! Hundreds to choose from. I'll nominate Jim Reeves who is NOT in the Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame!
I was cleaning out my messages and I see that I missed this post. Sorry.
I guess the picture I get of rock and roll is like the Mississippi River.... Lots of tributries which would be all the different genre's and influences and writers and contributors etc and then the whole big river of rock just rolling along sweeping along everything in it's path.. : )
The list of inductees shows groups of Performer, Non Performer, Lifetime Achievement and Early Influence. In years to come there may be more. I like some of all types of music and not all of any .... I like some rap; Eminem and his 8 Mile, which is the story of a guy trying to make it the same as has been said in rock for how many years but with a little different sound and some others, but rap can be broken down into different types too and I don't like them all, I like heavy metal, like Ozzie for sure but again not all, and metal has it's own sub groups and arguments about whether a band is really metal or not... etc. So this will be a never ending topic I guess. My feeling is better to talk and discuss than ignore LoL
So what are you going to call the new hall of fame? Has there ever been an organized attempt to get someone into one of the halls of fame like the Nashville Songwriters?
