I have been through the Smokies twice but mainly on the Appalachian Trail segment and that would have been in mid-March or so. As I recall it is about 75 miles south to north. It was freezing last time in 2004 and the Clingman Dome area and road was shut down because of snow. A lot of the trails are in need of maintenance work and hopefully some of the funds for this from the newly passed Ominbus Land Management Bill will go for the Smokies. It's one that foreign travelers often go to and over all it gets nearly 10 million visitors to one part or another each year. Hope to hike the AT against some day so look forward to a return.
Hey the trail is great.
Come a little furthur to the south In GA and look for woody gap. On a clear day you can see most of the way to Fla..
Another realy nice place blood mountain. Park at the travlers store and 45 minutes on the North trail and you come to one of the best water falls in the state. About a mile to the south of the store,on the road, is blood moutain cabins.
They have flock of lhumming birds there. A nice place to over nite.
