I recently had a new grandson born in the state of michigan. This child was born addicted and is still in the hospital withdrawing from all this. My sons g/f is going to court next week, I figure the state has stepped in and has took the child into states custody. My question is that being the grandmother do I have any rights to keep the child other than put it in foster care. I am in a diffrent state and know nothing of michigan law.My son did sign the birth certificate so legally I am the grandmother. I just feel so lost and helpless regarding this matter. My uttmost concern is for the safety and wellbeing of the child. Money for this child is no concern to me. I guess I need guidance on what are the first steps to take when the state is involved. Any answers will be apprefciated. I thought about calling a caseworker at the hospital to see what my rights are.But with all the hippi policys can they even point me in the right direction? Thanks!
