We live in Michigan an my daughter in law is home schooloing. The oldest boy age 14 wants to go to high school next year. They also have a 5 year old that is bright but does not have a phonics back ground and has never been in pre school. The are going to home school him. Their parents are not teachers and need to be in complete control. I have been trying to do what I can. Last Christmas I gave my 14 year old a lap top to help him. They will not even let him have a email address and he has not written any papers this school year. He is in eight grade. I can go on and on why we are very upset over this situation.
To get to the chase I was supposed to get the boys this weekend and the have said that I would not have them because we have been talking to the boys about our opinion on home schooling. This is not the first time they have been taken away. We did not have visitation for four years because the 14 year old who was then 5 went into the pond behind our house. Nothing happened but I made a big deal about it so nothing would happened in the future. I thought he should be put in swimming lessons which did not happen for 3 years. In retropect I should have said nothing. In other words it does not take much for them to want us out of their life. My son was laid off and heeded our help. That is why we had them again. Everyone said that when he got back to work we would be out again. Guess what they were right.
I tried talking sense to my son on the phone and he just hangs up. The boys have said their mother wears the pants in the house!
Even when we had the boys we where denied being able to give them oppontunities such as a trip to Washington DC, or even taking them to our yearly family reunion in West Virginia for 4 days. The boys love us and want to visit. We can give them experiences that they are not getting but run into a brick wall everytime we try.
Please give me any help or advice you can. Michigan has the most liberal homeschooling policy in the Nation. They do not even test to see at what level they have achieved.
