Great ideas and informative comments!
I've used just ordinary tomato paste, some with Italian seasonings or if plain, I add the garlic, etc. spreading it on purchased or home made crusts. Be careful on how thick you spread the paste. A try or two will tell you what amount of tomato paste suits your taste buds.
Once you have the crust spread with the tomato, you can be creative as to combinations of cheese, veggies, meat, or other toppings.
This is where we 'splurge'. We like the canned pizza sauce (which is more heavily spiced than other prepared sauces and more expensive). We mix it with paste and plain tomato sauce. We don't use that much of it on the pizza itself, but use the leftover mixture for pasta the rest of the week.
Works for us --- everyone has their own tastes. Main thing is that there is virtually no fat in our version --- more like vege burgers than pizza.
