The topic title is a familiar saying by the late Jackie Gleason to many of us who watched the "Honeymooners" and other of "the great one's" sitcoms and entertainment offerings in yesteryears. LOL
But I use Gleason's words referring to Sweet Basil, a favorite of mine ranking with garlic and cumin(in tomato dishes) in many of my meals. I grow it every year in my garden so I can add it freshly picked as needed. But there is no reason why Sweet Basil can not be grown in a patio planter or even indoors.
My home made chicken and vegetable soup as well as stews and chili are recipients of this flavorful herb, but it can be used in almost any dish or even salads. What I cannot use immediately, I pick and wash the leaves, add to the smallest plastic bag available(for individual servngs) with a tablespoon of water and freeze for winter and spring recipes.
Experiment with it (no smoking) since it can be overwhelming if too much is added to the recipe. When not available from my garden or freezer, I use the dried, commercial version.
I love basil and this year I decided for the first time to include an herb garden along with my vegetables. Yesterday, we planted sweet basil, thyme, parsley, chives, oregano and cilantro for my salsa. Can't wait to use everything.
