Unfortunately, these genetically-modified foods are grown for the enhancement of the company's bottom line...not our well-being...and anything that "man" messes with ends up worse off, in my opinion, because the motives are driven by greed and money. They cannot tell us the effects GM foods will have on humans in the long run.
Drug companies are constantly developing drugs to replace ones that already work just fine, because their patent has run out and they can't make any money off the old one. Hence, a new one is invented - whether it's better or not - just so they can make more money. How can we put our faith in companies with this kind of thinking? Astraea is right that the foods we ate when we were growing up didn't have chemicals added like they do now...and even if they weren't perfect, they were much better than what we are currently offered. I've tried to slowly switch all foods I eat to organic, as much as possible, including my makeup and skin lotions.
Oh...and make sure you check fruits when you buy them. By law they must have a sticker - or posting somewhere - indicating the country of origin...avoid any fruit coming from Mexico - their standards are pretty low.
You're so right; I remember reading about the development of square tomatos, since they'd be easier to pack without wasted space. Also read something about pineapples, but I don't remember what.
