So sorry for your losses and my story with my mom was quite similar.
As unbelievable as it may sound, I interview doctors who have patients in their 90s in the hospital with no hope and the families still demand - all and every measure to keep them alive.
That is such a shame! I don't think they realize the suffering that is going on in that loved one for no reason. It's an old idea that suffering has some kind of redemptive value and that stays with the culture in many ways. They may feel guilt or regret at letting go of the loved one, or maybe they still have hope but I have seen the good that hospice has done in our family, coming right into the family home where my sister was kept comfortable and loved until the last.
