A land of promise was God’s covenant for a people that followed the path set-down: written, and unwritten. Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt. He and all the Israelites carried this hope of promise into the wilderness.
Know that the commandments are not about the conduct of nations. Although they have influence. They are not about how groups interact. Although adherence to them allows for future cooperation. They are not even about the wrong done to you by others. They are simply a covenant between you and God. They are about your conduct.
When you leave in your horror of triumph, do you think they do not see what you have done to their land? Do those eyes harden? Over and over again, you and others have turned their land of warmth and promise to one of destruction, hunger, pestilence, despair. When a father and mother work to shelter their shivering children, they will grab a tool. Does that grip tighten? When the pain and agony of those you wounded and maimed scream into the night and beyond, do you think there is none to hear? Oh, it is heard.
Israel has fought war after war, battle after battle, decade after decade. Who are these enemies? What are their names? Why are they never ending? Where do they come from? Why is the hate and rage never ending? Oh, those questions have answers; you who are called to guide know this.
Who of the “innocent and helpless” have not seen with their eyes, felt with their hands, heard with their ears…. the extended hand of Israel?
