Am age 74 and have had a variable annuity since 2004 that pays a fixed amount each month. The value of the original principal has shrunk about 40%. An annuitization request gives two options -- to continue payout at the current level for 9 years or take a reduced payout for life. It would take about 14 years for the reduced payout to equal the 9-year higher payout. The principal would be lost in either case. Considering my age and the importance of the monthly payout what would be the better option?
