The other day a friend whom I consider very savvy, said that she'd been the target of a scam. She'd gotten a phone call & the person announced that she'd "be getting a new medical card." Then he asked for her bank or checking account number, to "correlate it" to the new card! At that point she asked what he "needed to correlate" .. and the caller hung up!
I personally would have asked immediately who the caller represented, and exactly what kind of "medical card" he was talking about .. because the call sounded totally bogus to me!
My friend called the local police & told them about it, but they didn't think it was something they could follow up. Truth is, they probably get too many calls like this to follow up! Her mayor did say he was meeting with the local seniors group, and would pass on a warning.
I know that the WWII generation has a reputation for "following the rules" and respecting people in authority positions .. but isn't "Using your common sense" also something they're known for?! Why would anyone answer personal or financial questions on the phone, when they get such a vague call from an unidentified source?! Do you worry about your parents or elderly friends, or a spouse falling for something like this?
