In Response to Low intelligence and conservative beliefs linked to prejudice:
I posted this about a year and a half ago in this discussion board. But some recent postings have convinced me to re-post this again. This is a scientific article that links conservative viewpoints to prejudice and lower levels of intelligence according to a scientific study conducted in the UK. Here is what the article has to say:
There's no gentle way to put it: People who give in to racism and prejudice may simply be dumb, according to a new study that is bound to stir public controversy.
The research finds that children with low intelligence are more likely to hold prejudiced attitudes as adults. These findings point to a vicious cycle, according to lead researcher Gordon Hodson, a psychologist at Brock in Ontario. Low-intelligence adults tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, the study found. Those ideologies, in turn, stress hierarchy and resistance to change, attitudes that can contribute to prejudice, Hodson wrote in an email to LiveScience.
Earlier studies have found links between low levels of education and higher levels of prejudice, Hodson said, so studying intelligence seemed a logical next step. The researchers turned to two studies of citizens in the United Kingdom, one that has followed babies since their births in March 1958, and another that did the same for babies born in April 1970. The children in the studies had their intelligence assessed at age 10 or 11; as adults ages 30 or 33, their levels of social conservatism and racism were measured. In another study, this one in the United States, Hodson and Busseri compared 254 people with the same amount of education but different levels of ability in abstract reasoning. They found that what applies to racism may also apply to homophobia. People who were poorer at abstract reasoning were more likely to exhibit prejudice against gays. As in the U.K. citizens, a lack of contact with gays and more acceptance of right-wing authoritarianism explained the link. [5 Myths About Gay People Debunked]

Mankind has evolved to the point where brains trump brawn almost every time. The person with the greater intelligence or brain power usually makes more money and is more successful than the person or man with more strength but lesser brain power. Of course there are many people who have well developed bodies and well developed brains. I have met and know of many athletes who are quite intelligent as well as very strong and muscular. It also has been shown that physical fitness and mental fitness often go hand in hand.
However my rather unscientific observations over the years has shown that people who harbor very conservative points of view are usually those who have lower levels of intelligence as well as less contact with others who might be different than themselves.
I also find it very interesting that many of the people I have known who harbor very conservative viewpoints have tended to be living in small towns, rural areas or suburbs where nearly everyone is from the same or similar ethnic or socio-economic background or status and have had very little contact with people from different ethnic or socio-economic backgrounds. Therefore it does not surprise me one bit that people who live in large cities or urban areas and have many interactions with people of different ethnic, racial or socio-economic backgrounds tend to be more liberal and tolerant.
This can be borne out when looking at the 2012 election results, particularly in a key swing state like Ohio. President Obama did very well in counties with large urban populations comprised of many different ethnic, racial and socio-economic backgorunds as well as counties dominated by large universities. While Romney did very well in the "white bread" suburban counties and those counties that are margely rural and small town (and overwhelmingly white).
Of course not everyone who lives in a major city or urban area is liberal and well educated, just as not everyone living in a small town or rural area is a bigot and a tea party member. But if one visits the large cities with their melange of different ethnic, racial and socio-economic groups living in close proximity; one can understand why people living in large cities tend to be more tolerant as well as more liberal.

Quite interesting article . I like to read good articles regardless if the source is Left or Right, if not I would be rigid. I like to keep my mind open. I wonder why the poster preferred to ignore some of the other possibilities mentioned in the article. I followed the link and read the article , I have to agree with the rigidity that comes with low I.Q. Let me mention part of the article which wasn't posted.
According to the article Nosek said: a study of Left-wing liberals with stereotypically naive view like for example "every kid is a genious in his or her own way, might find that people who hold these attitudes are also less bright. The author's conclusion was that it might not be a particular ideology that is linked to stupidity, but extremists views in general. Furthermore the article mentions Hodson, he explained that Most of the Present Research Literature Suggests that our prejudices are Primary Emotional in Origin rather than Cognitive. The conclusion: that the two pieces of information suggest that it might be particularly fruitful for researchers to consider strategies to change feelings towards outgroups rather than thoughts.
