The linked article describes Hawaii's plan to have car charging station infrastructure deployed statewide in the next few years. The company involved is also working to develop overseas (Europe, Australia) markets for a similar system deployment.
The Hawaiian system envisions all renewable energy sources to supply electric power to the network, expecially overnight wind power. Just a thought, I wonder if the big island has any possibility of tapping volcanic action for geothermal heat generation?
The link describes the plan in more detail, and names the company who is offering up the system plans. Hawaii seems a perfect place to set up an affordable prototype system to see what the actual cost and problems/opportunities might be in a real world setting.
