They haven't been able to make change over the years since the invention of the modern cash register. I'm thinking the young girl may have known, but was afraid it would screw up her register and affect her job.
Probably correct on the cashier's concern about screwing up the register. The ones I have trained have ALL worried about that. After telling them that you have to get all the sale items properly scanned or keyed, voided and corrected where necessary - it is hard to tell them that the register's end-of-day records do not account for cash tendered nor change given. The end of day summary records just tell you what you should have collected. The "journal" will tell you the rest of the story. Maybe that's what she was concerned about. I hope not.
