Why? Because socialism kills all incentive to do more, do better, invent new things. Can you name one socialist country that is a major power today. Even the Chinese (I know they are Communist but close enough) are coming around to capitalism. With socialism everyone has their hand out so the nanny state can take care of them from cradle to grave. And no, I do not slurp up the benefits of the socialism in our culture. I worked for everything I have from the time I was 14 until I retired.
I started working around 14, too. And, I worked hard, especially in the early years; later on, work got easier, and wealth accumulation got easier, as my personal productivity increased.
But, I recognize that the Internet, for example, is very definitely a "Socialist" institution/mechanism ............ and certainly, our wealth carefully maintained with FDIC common, cooperative insurance is very definitely a Socialist thing. And, I could go on and on listing aspects of our common, cooperative culture/society/philosophy which are very definitely derived from the concepts and strictures of "socialism" ..... but we have done that over and over, and it doesn't seem to make a dent in the perceptions of some folks ...... of course, sometimes we amuse the moderates, and perhaps that is our most important audience for these discussions.
