That's what I get for quoting without rechecking. According to the Treasury Dept. in 2008, the top 1% paid 34.8%. That's 34.8% paid by only 1% of the population. Talk about unfair. Do they get more benefits than the rest of us? No, probably less. The top 10% paid 67%. The top 25 % paid 82%. That means that one quarter of the population paid over three quarters of the taxes. I don't know where the cut off is exactly for rich versus non rich but we can see that the burden of taxes is not paid by the bottom 50% of wage earners who probably benefit the most from the big government. The bottom 40% paid nothing and yet they got a tax rebate. How do you rebate something from nothing?
What we need is a totally new tax system and much much less government. If they really wanted to stimulate the economy they should have taken the total amount and given it to the individuals. We would have bought new cars, new houses, new tv's etc. Instead they gave it to GM and are now telling them to declare bankruptcy. Talk about stupidity. The new president promised change but we haven't seen it. There is still no one looking out for us taxPAYERS!!
