Could be. I only know of Oklahoma right now. It keeps me very busy. I'm glad we have UI for those who have lost their job. Some will end up homeless or worse without it. From what I her from clients it gave them the incentive to continue to struggle to find something else because they could at least keep slightly under water and come up for air from time to time.
I was utilizing UI at one point in my life. I felt without it I would have ended up homeless with a child. It kept me from drowning under all the needs. Not want but needs. It barely helped but it was better than nothing. I ended up with a very good job in Computers, until they laid off, then I was able to go back to school and work part time in my field of study.
It may or may not stimulate the economy...I don't know. But it saved mine and my childs life. Without it we would have been homeless faster than I could find work. Once homeless, it is almost impossible to crawl out of the constant battle to find shelter. Then transfering a child from school to school is very hard on a kid. My son still remembers the sadness of leaving his friends behind. At one point he stopped caring if he made friends because he was always afraid of losing them again. I lost my car. We learned the bus system. But in Oklahoma, the men who are released from prison also use the bus system during the days we used it. I had to be very cautious about them being near my son, one day one of the offenders followed me home. I ended up in a protective environment because he was stalking me. When taking the bus, it would take hours to get home. My son would get out of school and have to wait for me. We had no money for cell phones. Finally a neighbor was kind enough to help us a few days a week. Then someone turned me in to child welfare cause my son was too young to be alone after school. What was I to do? So I had to find another job near by with lower pay. Then we lost our apartment because I couldn't pay the high rent and bills....it just went on and on. Not just for me but for many many Americans.
In Oklahoma there is a mindset that if you are poor or if something happens that causes you to be homeless, you are somehow responsible or caused it. It's called "blame the victim syndrome" in which conservatives play well. The truth is that things happen. If you have enough money from a job that you can save (few do) then once unemployed, you are likely to go through that pretty quickly. I know more people who went through what I did. I rarely see anyone trying to scam the system. The system in Oklahoma is there to feed the children and rarely do they help with much more. In order to qualify for assistance you must first be working and have a stable environment. See the problem? Why would you need assistance if you are stable?
The topic title blew my mind. It is the Centrists who keep these situations from becoming ridiculous either direction. The conservatives and the liberals both hate them, because they screw up the "all or nothing" agendas of both sets of radicals.
Many of the behaviors you blame on "centrists" are actually the behaviors of corruption and hypocrites. True centrists are the ONLY ones you can count on to balance the LEGITIMATE concerns of both sides. They may not be passionate for a radical agenda, but they are passonate for common sense utilitarian solutions. We actualy need a lot more of that, not less.
