The reality is that I have great faith in our government employees. The reason is simple. They are under a far tighter set of rules than in the private sector. Their jobs are always on the line the minute an administration changes hands. What possible reason would a small department of the IRS have to be guilty of deliberate omissions of their duties just so the Tea Party can have special treatment? This is really what the Tea Party and some of the right wingers today are all about...being treated as special Americans so they don't have to abide by the same rules and regulations the rest of us do. This is the scam the Tea Party is pulling off. If we let them get away with this, what else will their "special" status allow them to get away with?

government employees have more "protection" from firing than any private employees except those with "tenure" in education. Agency funds are at risk with new budgets or administration changes, but less than most businesses with economic and market changes.
I do think most government employees try to do a good job, but their rules are different.

You are correct that government employees are more protected than employees in the private sector, First, loosing a job in the private sector is quite easy and many times very subjective.
A simple change in their inmediate manager may trigger a loss of a job for an underling..
Regarding this particular issue. In all probability these employees were told in my view, in order to simplify matters to start with the obvious ones. and proceed from there.
This "scandal" as many have put it, is really very stupid. and most definitely is putting at risk jobs of individuals that simply were following orders that had nothing to do with the infringment of anyone's rights.
It is a pity, that the partisanship that is going on today, has reached the bounds that it has had.
And I am talking now of both sides of the isle. I don't know but I have the feeling that many are getting sick and tired of all of what is happening and all the investigations that are going on. and seeing that Congress, prefers to waste their time on issues that in reality are minor to all of us. And not do anything on the issues that are important to all of us.
