I think the point is really that there are SO MANY WAYS this could have ended in tragedy. Gun ownership is not a safe (or sane) event. CDC says a gun is 32 TIMES as likely to be used in a manner detrimental to the family (accident, suicide, mistaken identify shooting, etc.) as opposed to being used in defense of the family. I have said many times that you would not buy a toaster if it started a fire 32 times out of the 33 times you used it.
Can we please move beyond the indefensible bait and switch comment? What does the action of another person in another state have to do with the shooting of a 2 year old child by their 5 year old sibling? Absolutely nothing.
The entire point is that someone never taught this 5 year old the first rule of how to handle a gun - which is never to point it at another person unless you intend to shoot and possibly kill them, period! This 5 year old, was not taught this basic rule #1.
