I agree that the electoral college has served it purpose and should be abandoned.
In Response to Re: Everybody must pay taxes? What about everybody must vote?:
We all have our own opinions on the subject of voting. Personally, I would really like to see a direct vote and not an electoral college. That is one reason that many Americans don't bother to vote. they feel that their vote doesn't make a difference.
In my personal view, to require that every citizens vote, is no more or no less, that telling our citizens that they have the responsibility of their own goverment, If you are not required to get involved, How is this country thinks that they can change things.(if you don't like who's running vote for Micky Mouse.,that is an alternative. LOL)
I realize that many that have their own views of Democracy, may cry foul about this, but, just because we don't do it in this country, it doesn't mean that is not the right thing. Again, a good example of our ever standing ethnocentrisim.
A country as big as this one, cannot function with each State doing what they please. Unfortunately, the bigger the population, the more of a centralized goverment is needed.
Otherwise, seceding may be an option.
We cannot function or govern with the opinions of 300 million people.
Many in here think as the country we were when only 13 colonies existed, and I guess it worked well at that time. but now, it will be chaos.
The unwilliness to accept the necessary changes that we have seen, not only in our culture, but in our racial composition, needs many different ways to governing.
In a way, I do believe that within the next 20 years we will see many changes, because most of us, will not be here polluting this message board with intransigent threads.
