In Response to Re: REPUBLICANS OFFER UP A REALISTIC GUN CONTROL BILL:
The US needs gun registration, just as the Swiss have gun registration. It hardly seems to have made the Swiss less free. There are many guns in Switzerland, but rarely are they fired in anger or crime. And they have even less gun violence than one sees in the Land of Aloha.

There are a lot more things different between Switzerland,Hawaii and San Diego than gun control laws so I don't think comparisons have that much to do with gun control. That being said I am in favor of trying to eliminate and make illegal the possesion of high capacity rapid fire weapons by anyone not part of law enforcement or the military. Better licensing similar to auto registration requirements makes sense also.

Since it's mandatory that one pass a competency test to operate a vehicle in public, and it's a clearly established fact that competency testing is quite functional in keeping the grossly incompetent and criminally careless from needlessly endangering the public driving a vehicle - it is highly probable that mandatory training and competency testing for firearms usage would go a long way to help the untrained ninny be competent and perceptive enough to avoid shooting the cat, spouse, child or neighbor when it's not necessary to shoot.
There's the story about Wayne LaPierre that makes the joke - based upon an actual occurrence - that hunting with LaPierre is no more safe than hunting with Cheney.
