I don't think they used the Stand Your Ground defence. Just that he was defending himself and was in fear of his life. He was charged with second degree murder which implies it was not thought out in advance but was the result of a concious act and not neglegence. If he is acquited of second degree murder, he can't then be tried for manslaugher.

I believe that lesser charges will be added at the end of the trial, hoping that the prosecution is intelligent enough to do so. Yes, the DDA's are not the most qualified attorneys, they are usually what I call attorneys in training.
It is well known that after a few years serving with the DA they often quit and join private firms.maybe there is one in that team that happens to be a diamond in the rough.
