Yesterday President Obama made a strong speech addressing the global warming and actually proposing things to reduce our carbon dioxide emmissions. His proposals are bypassing congress and using the power of the executive branch. I offer congratulations to the president for taking such action without going through congress where climate change deniers no doubt would kill anything the president would like to get done.
In case anyone hasn't remembered, 2012 was the warmest year since records have been kept both in North America as well as the earth. We see proof in the shrinking of the polar icecaps and the opening of the Northwest passage in the arctic. At the current rate of warming, it is expected that the Arctic may be ice free in the summer by mid century. This could alter global air and ocean currents that affect our weather.
If anyone still denies that global warming is for real, just look at this video of Lake Travis, west of Austin Texas where the lake is at the lowest level in history. This was sent to me by a friend in Austin.
The climate change models show the desert in the southwest expanding eastward to include most of Texas. Other proof of global warming are sightings of southern bird species in northern areas where such sightings were previously rare. A good example is that mockingbirds (a southern species) were rarely seen in northern Ohio. Now they are nesting here.
Here is what the president's address on climate change said and what he is proposing to do about this threat:
