I am a 15 year, and my husband a 34 year, USAF veteran. We have just returned from 6 years in Germany. When did Americans become so self centered and mean? Many seem to feel that giving any necessity to the poor means taking something valuable from them. Where did our social conscience go? How can we as a nation deny people the basics of food, shelter, healthcare, and a living wage then blame them for turning to alternative lifestyles? We have politicians who have publically stated that their goal is to, "burn down the house" to keep our government from providing any of these most basic necessities of life. To me, this is paramount to saying, "I have ants in the kitchen so I must burn down the house to prevent them from going in to the living room". It makes no sense.
Obamacare is a model. It may not be the perfect model. But if we are to continue and create a healthy workforce ready for tomorrows challenges they must be healthy , educated and prepared. People keep saying, "What are we going to do with these people (meaning the poor )". I believe this is the wrong question. We should be asking, "how do we bring more of our society (poor and under educated) into the middle class". We cannot do this by keeping minimum wage at such a poverty rate (<$12K annually). Any rational person would be better off trying to take from government programs, sell drugs or steal instead of working for minimum wage. If we want our government to give less, pay more. If we want to create jobs stimulate the economic wheel by helping people contribute through greater incomes. If they want to decrease crime, provide incomes that provide incentives to work. If we want workers to be healthy stop tying healthcare to employment. If we want people to be educated then make public schools stronger instead of holding places for the poor.
If we want a different country then let's make it through positive change. To vote for someone who's goal is to burn down the house helps no one. To consider a shutdown a success is criminal! I am ashamed of who we are if we allow these self righteous crazies to take over our country. Yes, we have many complicated issues to solve. Let's move forward in a productive not destructive way.
