In Response to RE: Why Would I Go There? by jcofla
I can vouch for John's description of the central Gulf Coast of FL, I used to live in the same county but further inland. I left 14 years ago to be with family here in Greenville, SC, but am planning to retire back down there, hopefully, next year at latest. I will be vacationing first few weeks this coming July and am very excited.
As for Greenville, this is a nice place to live, I understand it is patterned after Austin, TX. Greenville was the textile capital of the world in its hey day, now is becoming a manufacturing and business mecca. We are midway between Atlanta and Charlotte, have the Peace Center for Performing Arts, The Bi-Lo Arena (15,000 seats), downtown has many shops, galleries, restaurants, condos & apartments, baseball field - replica of Fenway Park - the Swamp Rabbit Trail (rails to trails) that is around 17 miles long. During the warm months, several evenings a week there are bands set up for performing and the Main St is closed off. Greenville is becoming very pedestrian and pet friendly. I would not say this is an area for seniors (they keep moving seniors out of senior housing, tearing them down and building something else). There are lots of places for meeting other singles, but not geared for over 50's.
Greenville is approximately 1 hr drive from the mountains and 3 or 4 hrs from the beaches. Charlotte NC is northeast, Asheville NC is NW, Charleston SC is SE and Atlanta is south about 2.5 hrs drive.
Nice place to visit, but not planning for senior population that is quickly growing.
