Greetings! I am new to this group but figured I'd fit since I have 2 (nearly) 14-year-old Little Ole Ladies (LOLs), 6-8 Back Porch Kitties (BPKs) inherited from the next door neighbor, a "Kitchen Kitty" (formerly a BPK who is 9 and I finally allowed in when we had a 6" snow that lasted over a week (BAD for GA!) and her arthritis (I suppose) had her barely able to drag herself up the back porch steps to get food I put out twice a day...buffet-style, for any kitties who show up! Usually it's the same bunch; rarely is there an extra one.
If you wonder how on earth I ended up with all these cats, my next door neighbor was the "collector". With her advancing Alzheimer's, the cats started looking thinner and thinner, so I started feeding them as I couldn't bear them being so desperate for food. Currently it takes 3 16.? lb. bags of Cat Chow per month to keep them fed. At least now I know they have good food and fresh water when they show up for meals (twice a day). And, now as my older child informed me, I have turned into "the crazy old lady covered up in cats."
Last fall two of the BPKs had to have vet care, one for a bad and infected leg cut (and also was neutered at that time) and another (only young female) who was full of kittens. She was aborted and spayed. Those two cost me easily $300, and as I live on retirement & SS, it was a hardship for me for a couple months. None of the BPKs have ever had any immunizations. My LOLs have, in years past, but I stopped them because they never go outside nor associate with other cats.
Now I am considering immunizations for the whole bunch...one at a time. The *problem* is that the little female BPK now has a constantly runny nose, sneezes to clear it (and clears out a lot of "stuff"), and sometimes coughs a rather racking cough. Any guesses as to what is wrong with her? Another old battle-scarred tom also has a bad cough. Is this from the hard, cold winter we have had, or something worse?
The KK also sonetimes has the runny nose. For her, though, is the drooling, particularly when she is brushed. It's like a running water fountain, and yesterday, it had an orangish tinge to the drool at one point. Any guesses here? FWIW, the KK is NOT in proximity with the LOLs. They are kept separate.
I worry about them, but I can't treat all of them at one time as needed due to funds scarcity. Neither do *I* want to contract any sort of disease(s) from them nor expose my LOLs to any diseases inadvertantly.
Also, FWIW, one of my LOLs has developed drooling when she is sitting in my lap quietly and I occasionally am barely rubbing on her head. Why?
I NEVER had cats in my life until the two LOLs adopted ME 14 years ago (this spring). I knew nothing about cats and have had to learn on the fly. Now that I've inherited all the BPKs (neighbor is now in a nursing home with her Alzheimers and will never be at home again), and some of them appear to have problems, I'm wondering if anyone can hazard any guesses, give information and suggestions.
Also, WHERE can I find this miraculous cat litter?!!?
