I'm not talking about having a fear of flying. I'm talking about a different kind of fear.
The oil spill in the Gulf Coast has had a devastating effect on the tourism industry. But most people are cancelling their trips to beaches that are completely unaffected by oil. They're letting their fears of the unknown get in the way, and Gulf Coast tourism is reeling because of it.
I've heard of travelers avoiding a Jamaican holiday because they're afraid of the violence in Kingston, which is nowhere near the resorts. Localized protests in Bangkok affected tourism as far away as Phuket and Chiang Mai.
I say the best time to travel somewhere is after its suffered a blow beccause that's when you find the best deals, the fewest crowds, and you know that your travel dollars are going to the right place.
