Hi Medicare Man:
I was hoping to get some advice from you. I am a broker in FL and I am trying to help a client of mine who currently has a Medicare Advantage plan through Aetna. When the client enrolled in the plan back in Nov 2007 she elected (on her application) to have her premiums deducted from her social security check. The clients check is deposited into her bank account and of course social security does not send a statement unless requested. The client did although receive a notcie from social security letting her know they were going to be deducting her medicare advantage premiums.
Long, long story short. Somewhere along the line social security stopped witholding the premiums from her check. The client was never made aware the premiums were no longer being withheld and she continued to use her insurance. She was never advised that she was noe paying her premiums. It is now May of 2008 and apparently only 2 months of premium were withheld from her check. Aetna just sent her their first correspondence letting her know that she needs to pay $700 plus or her coverage will be terminated. They will not give her a payment plan or anything. In addition, they will not configure the amounts were withheld into her amount owed. They claim that they never received anything from social security. What would you recommend? I have spent hours on the phone with medicare, social security and Aetna.
