I am a cluster headache (CH) sufferer. I reached the age of 65 in January of this year when I began Medicare coverage. I assumed that I would be able to continue to abort my severe headaches using oxygen therapy. After doing some research on the internet, I discovered that CMS had determined that there was not enough evidence that the use of oxygen is a viable and appropriate method to end a CH as it is beginning and before it becomes unbearable. I cannot understand why it should not be covered by Medicare.
Now, as I am entering a cluster period, I am panicked. I am no longer covered for my oxygen. Now I need to purchase two oxygen tanks and pay to have them filled every week in order to get relief.
How can I get CMS to reconsider their decision last year to deny coverage to those of us who rely on and benefit from the use of oxygen as an abortive for the unbearable pain of a cluster headache?
