In Response to RE: Memoir prompt June 2012: High School Memories by Sparkel18
Frances, glad to hear you are enjoying the book. It is quite evident that we have similar memories. I haven't met many people who ever heard of Lydia Pinkham (except Irish Rover fans who loved Lilly the Pink).
In my later years, I spent a lot of time digging up old bottles from ancient trash heaps in Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, and Montana. I still have a few of the better ones.
One of my favorite collections is a treasure trove of love letters that I found in a packrat's nest in an abandoned farm house in eastern Idaho. The letters were written to a young school "marm" named Tessy Shane before WWI who evidently hid them in the wall of her cabin. The letters were written by an illiterate cowboy who used a pencil stub as a writing utensil and a rich merchant from a nearby town who wrote in flowing cursive with a fountain pen. It took a while to figure out that sweet Tessy finally married the cowboy instead of the merchant...much to my delight. I tried for years to track the family down to give them the old lover letters but was never successful. I've always wanted to write a novel based on the wonderful history that the letters contained.
