In Response to RE: Memoir prompt June 2012: High School Memories by Bryteyz
Thanks for sharing your high school memories. I hadn't thought about our bus driver in years.
His name was Jake and he was the only driver we ever had as he drove the same route in grammer and high school. He seemed to graduate along with us.
I, too, lived almost at the end of the route, there being only two more stops following ours. When we were in high school they built a Dairy Queen near us. On rare occasions Jake would stop at the DQ so we could get a treat. We always tried to save a bit of money from our lunch just in case. This was no problem for me because I disliked milk anyway. We were under strict orders of secrecy because it was not only against county rules but would also make the students who had already left the bus feel badly. This make it even more special, of course.
We graduated on our football field which was beside a small lake. It was June in Georgia and it was hot and humid under those caps and gowns, not to mention the fact that I was sunburned. It was beautiful all the same. There were 400 of us and it took place at sunset. I walked between two boys I had known since grammer school and every time I would start to get sentimental one of them would punch me and make me giggle about something. I was glad I had waited for graduation instead of going to college a year early, as my two best friends had done.
