(1) I've told this story before but will tell it again for those who never saw it. I did a little shopping during my lunch hour, parked in a lot across from my office and took the bags with me to put in the refrigerator - back in the days of paper bags. As I crossed the street I stepped in a pothole and fell, spraining my ankle. I couldn't get up.
This big fancy car drove up and the man driving stopped but then went AROUND me and kept going. I was trying to crawl to the curb when this really ratty looking guy came along - looked like a derelict. He came over, helped me up and to the curb, then picked up my groceries. First he helped me into my office and then went back for the groceries. Not one thing was missing afterward. My boss offered him a twenty and he refused it.
Two of my co-workers took me home - one drove my car & the other followed so she could take the first one back. But what has always stayed with me was how you cannot judge people by their appearance.
(2) I was out with a male friend. His daughter's car had broken down at a rest area so I accompanied him to pick it up. He had rented a trailer to put the car on (was driving a pickup truck). I couldn't be much help and he had trouble getting the car hooked up to a chain and lining it up. A couple of guys and girls came out of the building - they were rough looking and were riding motorcycles - piercings, tatoos, you name it. Jim admitted he was just as nervous as me when they approached, but they took over and got the car on the trailer and wouldn't take a penny for the help. You just never know.
