Patty, your story really captures the Fourth of July as we knew it as kids. We grew up in different areas of the country, but the rituals were the same. I can relate to you and your sister wearing your bathing suits under your clothes so that you didn't have to change. Yes, they dried very quickly on a hot summer day as we spent most of our time in the water. I, too, remember my mother telling us not to go swimming after a meal as it would give us cramps and we could drown. A few times we went to the beach in Chicago. The waves were captivating, but I could never understand how they sat at a picnic bench under an umbrella. It was all about us being kids, spending a memorable day that would quickly pass in a few years.
