In Response to RE: An Unplanned Adventure by PattyDiane
I've never been to Jamaica, but went on a cruise to PR, St Thomas and St Croix with my daughter Karen and her family. It was just a few months after my second husband Cliff died in 1995 and Karen and Glenn treated his mother Lela and me to this wonderful vacation. We had a wonderful experience with one exception.
At St Thomas I went on a shopping tour with Lela. This involved getting into what was basically a remodeled pickup truck with rows of seats one behind the other. The shopping center was at the top of a mountain. Going up was slow but steady and the views of the Caribbean and other islands was amazing. It was also interesting because we were the first ship to dock after a major hurricane had devastated much of the region. At one point we passed a huge yacht that the storm surge had carried from the marina quite far inland and on the opposite side of the road. Most houses had FEMA roofs (bright blue tarps) and there was a lot of damage still to be fixed. One section of the shopping center had also been heavily damaged and was still being repaired. Even so, we had a nice time and ate lunch there.
On the way back, I made the mistake of sitting on the end of my row to the right - which meant that as we went down the mountain I was often looking straight down into an abyss with no guard rails. As nervous as I was, one woman in our row had a rip-snorting panic attack and had to be restrained from jumping "ship" by a man alongside her and one behind. She screamed the whole way down, and the driver kept going as if this was normal. She actualy hit Lela a couple of times while she was flailing her arms around. Needless to say we reached the bottom none to soon for any of us.
