In Response to RE: childhood reading by PattyDiane
Sandy, you were writing this post about the same time as I was writing mine this morning. My grandfather was also a sharecropper and the family was very poor. I see you also used the term "funny papers" as I did. I can also relate to the canning, plowing, milking and wahing on a ringer machine. I can still recall the smell of sun drenched sheets newly brought in from the clothes line. We had a well for water and had to draw it up with an old metal bucket. The outhouse (toilet) was located out by our barn and it was really great when we finally got running water and an indoor bathroom.
Thanks for posting.
