In Response to RE: SOLDIERS COMING HOME by deevine50
Today on the Oprah show, 4pm EST, she will be talking to recent veterans and soldiers still on duty. She shows how this country still forgets to honor our veterans who have returned home only to become homeless, unemployed and in desperate circumstances. Soldiers on duty across the world are still not assured that this country is caring for their loved ones left here to wait.
We are a country who would honor John Wayne, an actor who played patriotic soldiers in movies. Yet, we are the country, that while at war with Germany, when German soldiers of war who had killed Americans were treated better than black American soldiers home from war, simply because the Germans were white. German soldiers being sent by train to a holding station in the South were allowed to sit in the front of the train, while honorable black soldiers were sent to the back of the train. In San Francisco in the 80's at least 4 out of every 5 homeless men were vietnam vets. This is a country where too often partisan political point of view can define whether we will acknowledge our debt to a soldier for his or her service. That is wrong. We like to spout our patriotism mantra, but it often does not reflect our behavior when our soldiers return and need our help.
God bless America and the very soldiers who fight to make sure each of us can continue to speak our minds.
