Do Great Minds Think Alike?
Great minds do not think alike, and whoever said they did, didn’t have one. The one sure thing about Politics is that it leads to arguments. Discussing politics openly will make enemies. There is no consensus on how a government should be run, not today, and not in Socrates’ time.
There is also no consensus on how an online community should be run, either, especially if it includes political discussions, aka, rants. Should you give the community a blank slate to write on, with little or no guidance, rules, or intervention? Or, should you maintain peace the old fashioned way, with medieval torture instruments, threats, and punitive measures?
But, the important thing is the conversation. By speaking our minds we find out how we think, and how others think about our ideas. We may not change our minds when reading another user’s diatribes, but, we may think hard about what they have said, and, why they said it. We may appreciate their viewpoint better, even though we vehemently disagree. A good forum writer is able to make you think and understand his or her views, but doesn’t undermine yours.
Does that leave room for outrage? Of course, as long as we can back up our frustrations with some facts. And, the facts have to actually be true, since inventing them always gets discovered. Anyone who risks statements without validating facts with accompanying links is playing with fire, and may get burned. If you are willing to follow a few rules, back up your facts, and know how to rant, you can survive a political forum. Just bring your outrage.
You can find political debaters, and others, in the Politics Current Events group, and
in the group called Voice Your Opinion
