I am going to Sicily, in particular Balestrate, in June 203 for 3 weeks with my granddaughter. I want to rent a flat or small house for my stay. Can you give me any advice or recommendations on where to find a place to rent.
When I went to Sicily, I was with my daughter, and we are both pretty adventurous - so we drove. She did most of the driving in the towns and Catanaia. That is the tricky part - I don't recommend it for everyone. Also the occasional winding mountain road.
I would recommend a tour for most people, unless you have a fearless driver with you. There are a lot of hills, steps and uneven pavements to traverse so it's important to be able to walk. But the people are friendly and helpful and it was beautiful in a rustic way. Different from Tuscany and Italy where I've also been. The countryside on the East Coast is like California or Arizona - I was there in Spring so there were flowers and green, but I think in summer it turns quite brown. I would skip going into the big cities like Catania and Palermo, and focus on the hill towns like Taormina and the Greek towns like Syracusa.
