In Response to How to recycle an old Computer by AlexH
Thanks, Alex, for the tips on being sure all is erased from a hard drive before recycling a computer.
It was especially useful to remind people to back-up everything on a DVD, or a series of CDs to ensure they hadn't forgotten something that will become important to them later - like the file for last year's taxes. Could they also use a flashdrive to do that? My one brother uses flashdrives for everything from what he tells me.
I moved 3 times in 5 years & lost the use of a computer along the way. I carried that thing with me through 2 moves before I found the time to back-up the data, transfer it to my new pc & clean the hard drive,
Many of my relatives are just learning how to use a computer & they're all at different levels of learning, so the technical terms and jargon don't mean much to many of them. Several of them are learning on their own, so weren't aware of watching for the "s" at the end of the http URL, or the lock at the bottom of the page to indicate when they were on a secure screen.
That's why I'm so grateful when people like yourself share helpful tips so we all can learn different things about protecting our data from those who wish us harm.
