In Response to RE: Anyone Try Berberine? by aruzinsky
Between 2/1/13 and 2/15/13, I substituted berberine for metformin. My blood glucose, HDL, and triglycerides became worse. I discontinued the experiment after only two weeks because it was obvious from my daily blood glucose tests that the berberine was not controling my blood glucose nearly as well as metformin. My HA1C rose from 5.0 (12/5/12) to 5.6 (2/20/13), my HDL dropped from 50 (4/20/12) to 40 (2/20/13) and my triglycerides rose from 149 (4/20/12) to 164 (2/20/13).
I purchased berberine powder from http://www.beyond-a-century.com/Berberine-Powder--100-grams_p_527.html and filled "00" gelatin capsules with it. The filled capsules contained an average of 700 mg of this powder. I substituted these filled capsules for the 500 mg metformin tablets that I take four times a day. Also, I take glipizide in variable dosages depending on what I eat and my blood glucose test results, but normally average 20 to 30 mg/day. Thus, during the berberine experiment, I automatically increased my glipizide dosages in an effort to compensate for the increased glucose.
The only good thing to come out of this experiment is my increased appreciation of metformin. Right now, I am experimenting with increasing my metformin dosages from 4 pills to 5-6 pils/day. So far, the results have been impressive.
