I just saw this movie (in 3D and you are right...for once the 3D made sense). Visually it is quite striking and shows creative use of new technolgy i.e. computer generated stuff. It's dramatic and beautiful. To borrow from Tennyson shows "nature red in tooth and claw". And leads to all sorts of ruminations on our relationship to other creatures and our planet.
But in terms of exploring spiritual stuff I must say I found the movie a bit disappointing. I never read the book but I read elsewhere that it is about the narratives we weave for ourselves..sorta like is it better to believe in god or not, better to believe in man's inherent goodness or not. Lost on me -- the ending was totally eclipsed emotionally by the sweeping drama of the middle.
