You know how they tell you that you only have to keep most records 7 years? Well employees & retirees of my company just received a mailing about a class action suit against the health insurer we used for many years, saying that they under-paid for various medical services. We have to file our claims using our own records .. from 1994 thru 2009! These are all records that are computerized & could easily be summarized by United Healthcare .. but it's not their responsibility!
Good God, that's 16 years ago, and for most people who haven't had any serious ongoing medical issues, we've probably shredded all those convoluted statements anyway. Now we have to decide what "class" of claimant we are, based on where we'd get the most back. If you don't have records, you'd get a set refund for each year. If you have records & had lots of out-of-network medical expenses you paid out of pocket, you might get more as a different class of claimant. I think I won't be greedy & to just preserve my sanity, I won't even look thru my records, but file for the $50/year refund!
