For the last 25 years of my life, I have worked in Long Term Care. Originally I started out as a Social Services Director, then an opportunity presented to focus on Memory Care ( Alzheimer's Disease) . Our facility identified a need for a specialized area to care for residents who demonstrated wandering. We started out small with one wing, then soon expanded to a 36 bed unit. Over the years I have worked in three Memory Care Units and facilitated support groups as well as been responsible for training the staff in dementia care. On a personal note, after beginning this career in Memory Care, I found out that my own mother had dementia. My family and i then experienced the disease first hand. My mother's journey with the disease lasted around 12 years. Her journey ended 2/16/11. Since that time I have become painfully aware that I have lost my spirit and desire to work with individuals and families experiencing this disease. I have just resigned my position as a memory care director and have began the search for a new career. I googled the same, and found your website. Being a long time Jane Pauley fan, I decided to watch the video of her upcoming segments on the Today show. I want to help make a difference in our world. I live in a small rural area of central Illinois. I'm looking for advice and a new beginning. I have a BSW degree, which limits my options, but with so much experience there must be something I can do. Suggestions???
