I know it's a bunch of condominiums now, and that it was "Kensington-Johnson" School when it closed. But when I was there (1953-57) it was just plain Kensington School. There was no air conditioning, just those high, high ceilings and the huge windows the teachers had to open and close with a long stick. Mrs. Pingree, Ms. Leigh, Mrs. Edwards, they were all there in my time. You could get directly out into Middle Neck Road by going through that gate in the playground and walking past the little French restaurant down the outdoor corridor. You could play the local version of marbles on the playground, later banned as "gambling." I think the happiest hours of my life were spent in and around Kensington School.
