In Response to ACTION: Tell Congress Seniors Need Relief by Advocates2010
Today I posted this message to Anthony Weiner, NY Rep., House (D)
Thank you so much for replying to my complaint about COLA and how it affects Social Security Benefits for Senior Citizens. I was much impressed because you were the only member of Congress to acknowledge me. I was further impressed by your statement of introducing a bill to change the way COLA data is compiled for urban areas.
I wrote to DOL and Social Security and today I received a response from Sheryll Ziporkin, Assoc. Commissioner, Office of Public Inquiries…"The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers is a measure of the average change in prices paid by (same) for a "market basket" of goods and services. Because this index is a statistical average, it may not reflect and individual's personal experience…""Changes in the formula to adjust Social Security and SSI benefits, including the use of this consumer price index, would require congressional action to change the law."
Today I was in my local Key Foods supermarket and the elderly woman in front of me was appalled that she had to pay $1.04 for two bananas. "How do they expect us to eat?" was her question to me. I certainly can't answer that one. Can Congress?
Please, please don't forget about us. We've worked hard all our lives and it seems that we shouldn't become the new "Urban Poor."
